Dear Teachers

Ecology and the care for our environment are two current topics in education and are means to a healthier life.  With the ECOHEAD website you can follow and support your students in participating in and growing their ecological awareness which will lead them towards better and more responsible relationships with Nature.

ECOHEAD is a basic platform from which you, as teacher, can shape your lessons towards specific curriculum goals for learning language (English) across ecological topics and contents/subjects such as biology, geography, mathematics, science, gym and/or others. As a LANGUAGE TEACHER or a SUBJECT TEACHER working together, you can find very interesting ways on ECOHEAD to support your students and expand their knowledge and understanding where new content meets new language. If you connect your lessons to real life (parents) and what is happing in the local community, children will learn more holistically within their own learning needs and through individual experiences, which by latest research findings, is a great influence for learning.

The LEARN Module gives essential knowledge and information about three overall issues: ecology, water and waste. We have permission to use materials from UN Water and you can freely use these documents as sources for learning. There are many educational videos on YouTube, we recommend the following:

Nasa Earth Science – Water Cycle – for older children – Reading skills, Listening comprehension

Water cycle narrated by a young learner – Students’ level of understanding, Home experimenting

Why is so important to have an access to clean water and sanitation – Listening comprehension, Memorizing facts and numbers

Wastewater treatment narrated by a young learner – Visualization of the process, Understanding

Bill Nye – Ecology, Ecosystems, Biodiversity – for younger and older children – listening comprehension, new ideas

New key vocabulary is found in here. The letters are scrambled each time so it can be played over and over. Charts are printable, so you can use them as hand-outs. It is a mixture of nouns and verbs, divided in three basic content sections. It is recommended to be played in student pairs (with a weaker and advanced student in the pair).

Ice Slide is a single player activity and helps develops creative problem solving. It can also be used to calm down students between activities.

Quizzes can be played in groups or pairs where one group is asking the questions – the other is answering and then switching. Children can add their own questions and personalize them. You can set a special rule where ECOHEAD webpage is the only source for answers.

The purpose of this activity is to encourage participation from all the students. This is a great section for shy, introverted and dyslexic children, as they have a choice to get involved, to speak, to communicate or simply just answer the question.

Visualisation of all the characters and symbols on the ECOHEAD website in the MEMORY game has two main goals. First, these games stimulate the parts of a student’s brain that are involved in the manipulation, storage and retrieval of information from memory. They are good for visual memory, focusing and organizing information. They are highly recommended for dyslexic pupils. Second, all the visual images are connected to the content on the ECOHEAD website and they link students to environmental issues.

The game is played with ICT. All the cards are also printable, so you can choose which format suits you better. In the paper version you can add writing or speaking only, where children write or name the pairs they have found aloud.

The 4R Module, gives children useful tips for ECO actions and the choices they make in everyday life. Children are always looking to find a connection to real life. Most of the time, they learn from you and your actions. So please – BE A RESPOSIBLE ECO ROLEMODEL for your students, show them that you and their school care “by doing”. Waste management is organized differently among municipalities around Europe; we recommend that you contact your local Waste management company for detailed information about waste separation and sorting techniques in your communities. Afterwards students can make comparisons and presentations about how similar and different our systems are. Presentations for parents and members of the community can be held in conference rooms in Public water & waste management companies, Reuse centres or Water treatment plants. This is how you can connect learning to the wider community and promote early ecological awareness and education at the same time.

The SHARE Module encourages students to talk about meaningful behaviours and ideas with you and their schoolmates and can be used to compare their thoughts with classes in your school and networks. ECOHEAD has also been designed to be shared on Social network sites.

We truly believe that ECOHEAD can guide and help you with developing an early ECO awareness in your classrooms. For any questions or ideas please feel free to contact us. Enjoy ECOHEADS!
